George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College Dual Admission Compact for the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

The MASON-NOVA Dual Admission Compact for Mechanical Engineering is designed to outline your path to success from the Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Engineering to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Mechanical Engineering in the Volgenau School of Engineering.

Who is Eligible?

The Dual Admission Compact is designed for students who:

  • Plan to earn an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree from Northern Virginia Community College
  • Plan to pursue the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Mechanical Engineering in the Volgenau School of Engineering within one year of completing the A.S. degree
  • Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.50
  • Earn a grade of C or better in all attempted Chemistry, Math, Physics, or Engineering course required for the Associate’s in Science degree

What are the Advantages of the Compact?

  • Coordinated Academic Advising—While completing the Associate of Science (A.S.) degree, Compact students receive personalized academic advising from both NOVA and MASON Engineering advisors to ensure that participants are successfully completing the correct sequence of courses leading to completion of the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Dual admission—While completing their A.S. degree at NOVA, a Compact student may enroll in up to 2 engineering courses offered through the BSME program at Mason. With joint MASON-NOVA agreement, a student can only take a course using this option if the desired course is not available at NOVA or is not being offered in the semester in which he/she registers.
  • Library Access—Compact students have access to the vast resources of Mason’s Fenwick Library.
  • Programming—Compact students will participate fully in Volgenau School of Engineering Day events in additon to specific programs sponsored by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Student Outreach-- Student organizations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Engineers for International Development (EFID), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), etc.
  • Opportunities to participate in Internships and Co-operative education programs
  • Smooth Transition—Compact students enjoy a smooth transition to Mason. They will have met regularly with Mason Volgenau School faculty and staff while attending NOVA and will become familiar with Mason’s academic policies and know which upper-level courses they will need to complete for the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering upon entry to Mason.

Why You Should Participate

Beginning your college education at NOVA is a convenient and affordable way to accomplish your educational goals. Academic advisors from both NOVA and MASON will help ensure that your credits are applicable to the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. NOVA students may transfer up to 75 credits toward the 121 credit hour BSME program

How to apply?

  • To gain the best experience from the Compact, student’s should apply before they have earned 18 credits
  • Complete the MASON-NOVA Dual Admission Compact for Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Application here and send your current transcripts to Admissions via myNOVA
  • When you have been accepted into the Compact and are ready to for dual admission, complete the Mason Non-Degree admission application
