Admission Requirements for Transfer Applicants

Each year Mason enrolls talented transfer students from all over the world who have demonstrated success in their postsecondary academic work and present a richness of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and geographic origins. Although the Admissions Committee considers each transfer application individually and reviews all grades received in courses attempted, as well as the rigor of the applicant's academic program, there are certain factors all traditional transfer applicants must present.

  • 30 or more transferable semester hours, one academic year
  • Freshman English Composition and a Mason Core equivalent math, both completed before application
  • 2.85 or higher cumulative grade point average
  • A transfer essay
  • Resume for any applicant with gaps in enrollment
  • Non-native speakers of English must meet the University English Language Proficiency requirement

Due to the competitive nature of our admissions process, Mason offers admission to a very small number of students who only have one year of college coursework at their previous institution. In addition to the requirements mentioned above, these applicants must present:

  • Secondary school transcript
  • ACT or SAT scores

Mason Core English and Math requirement

All traditional transfer applicants are expected to have completed a three-semester hour course in English Composition and a three-semester hour course in college-level math prior to application to Mason. Both courses must be equivalent in transfer to meet the Mason Core. The English course must be equivalent to ENGH 101 and the Math course must be equivalent to one of the following: MATH 106, 108, 110, 111, 113. 125 or STAT 250. The Transfer Search Tool may assist you in understanding this requirement. Applicants who have not completed the English and Math requirement before applying to Mason will not be offered admission.

VCCS Applicants

Choose ENG 111 or ENG 112 and one of the following MTH courses: MTH 151, 152, 170, 173, 181, 240, 241, 271 or 272. NOTE: MTH 158 and MTH 163 do not transfer to Mason. You are strongly encouraged to complete ENG and MTH in your first two semesters at the community college.

Summer Courses

Fall applicants who are admitted early may enroll for summer courses in Mason's A, B or C Summer Term. No additional application is required.

Application Deadlines

Priority deadline: Fall Semester March 1st
Spring Semester October 1st

The Office of Admissions will consider applications for regular transfer admission after the priority deadlines on a space-available basis. Late applicants are not considered for GAA admission.

Submission of Official Transcripts

Have official transcripts from all previous institutions sent directly to the Office of Admissions. To be considered official, the transcript must be transmitted directly from the Registrar at your previous school(s) to the George Mason University Office of Admissions. Transcripts may be mailed, faxed or sent electronically to: ugtrans@gmu.edu. Unofficial transcripts will not be processed.

If you have fewer than 30 hours of earned university-level credit, you must also submit your high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores. (Students who graduated from high school more than five years prior to enrollment at Mason are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores.) Admission is competitive and the Admissions Committee may require a high school transcript even though you have completed more than 30 hours of university-level credit.
